Bantry Bay at a glance
Situated on the slopes of Lion's Head between Sea Point and Camps Bay and overlooking some of Cape Town's best beaches, Bantry Bay in Cape Town is an exclusive suburb that delivers visual delights in spades. Spectacular sunsets, crashing waves, and protection from the wind make an ideal place in which to relax and explore Cape Town's offerings.
A brief history of the area
Bantry Bay was originally called Botany Bay after a botanical garden that was planted here for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. The name was changed during the First World War. The first settlement in Bantry Bay was established in 1783, alongside Clifton. The affluent suburb is overlooked by Lion's Head and visitors will notice an eroded outline of sandstone on the rocky coastline where it sits. Interestingly, there is a plaque on the seashore that commemorates Charles Darwin who visited the area. He made pivotal geological observations related to the origin and nature of granite in the area.
Climate
Bantry Bay is known to be the most wind-free area in Cape Town. Secluded and protected, this area gets about 290 wind-free days per year - a significant fact given Cape Town's windy climate. It's sunny and mild, and while it doesn't have its own beach, the nearby beaches of Clifton or Saunders Rock are a walk away.
Schools in the area
While the majority of Bantry Bay residents won't have school-going children, it is still well-positioned in terms of schools, with the French School, Herzlia, Sea Point Primary and High, and Camps Bay being within 420m to 2km away. The city is just a short drive away, giving access to Reddam, and Jan Van Riebeeck High School.
Healthcare in the area
Medical help is in abundance for Bantry Bay residents. The Sea Point Medical Centre, Cape Town Mediclinic and New Netcare Hospital offer a range of specialised treatments.
There are also many specialists and general practices in Sea Point Main Road including General Practitioners, Chiropractors, Paediatricians, and aesthetic-focused doctors.
Shopping centres
Bantry Bay is set apart from the Sea Point and CBD hustle and bustle. However, the newly opened Sea Point Galleria shopping center is located in Sea Point's Main Road with a wide assortment of niche stores and restaurants. The V&A Waterfront is also just 15 minutes away, offering everything from boutiques and supermarkets to specialty stores.
Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)
Bantry Bay is about 10 minutes from the Cape Town CBD, and 40 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. It's just 5 minutes away from the V&A Waterfront.
Restaurants
There are a couple of quaint cafes in Bantry Bay, like Step Brothers - great for an Italian dish or early morning coffee and pastry; but most of the nearby restaurants can be found in Sea Point or Camps Bay. Walk down to Mouille Point for an after breakfast or pre-dinner preamble.
Special attractions
Bantry Bay is special in and of itself, and boasts extraordinary views, and wind-free conditions from which to enjoy them. Residents love the long walks one can take down to Clifton and Camps Bay or Sea Point. Bantry bay is also very close the attractions of Table Mountain, and of course, all of the blue fag neighbouring beaches, where one might spend long days and evenings, lapping up Cape Town's best.
